Newton Wins Best Soundtrack
Turns out the Singapore Short Film Awards Best Soundtrack category was meant for the overall sound – design, mix, music etc. And Newton won! Yay!
Congratulations to Ho Tzu Nyen, director, and Matthew Koh, co-sound designer, as well!

I must admit I was in complete shock when Newton was announced as winner. Really stumped. By the time I found my way to the stage, I realised for the first time that I had a problem with public speaking – I was shaking. And there were so many things I felt I should’ve mentioned in retrospect – how sound is ever so important but always neglected, that it should really be considered in pre-production and not treated as the last hope for salvation for any film, how everything sound-based is so intertwined that the location sound recordist, sound designer, sound mixer and the composer should be nominees too for the award and why everyone should hire me etc. But I didn’t. Oh well…

Dirty Bitch was the biggest winner bagging home 2 awards for Best Fiction and Best Director! Congrats Sun! And congratulations to the other winners!

I just came back from a much needed vacation in Taiwan, and look what great news I received! 3 projects I’ve worked on have been nominated for the Best Soundtrack Award in the 1st Singapore Short Film Awards. The nominees are:
*Dirty Bitch (Foley Artist)
*Threshold (Sound Mixer)
*Newton (Co-Sound Designer/Mixer)
The Karma Of The Tree Sentinel Who Awakes
This award is such a great initiative. Finally an award in Singapore that puts the spotlight on us sound guys! We’re more often than not only heard and not seen. All the other awards have a recipient’s name attached to it, except for Best Soundtrack. I’m assuming it’s awarded collectively to everyone that helped made the film sound good – composers, designers, mixers, location sound recordists etc.
In any case, I’m super thrilled! The Awards Ceremony is going to be held on 31st January 2010. For more information, please visit the Singapore Short Film Awards website here.

The Will 《一切从遗嘱开始》

Just completed dialogue editing for Channel U’s latest telemovie ‘The Will’. It stars Taiwanese actors Ah Bu, Johnny Lu and Lin Yu Xuan. The story is about 2 brothers, each with their own money and life problems, who suddenly inherit $5 million from their deceased father. Through the lawyer, they realised they had a half sibling who was one of the inheritors and they have to find him before the inheritance can be released.
Kudos to Michelle Chong, who plays Ah Bu’s ex-wife, for a no holds barred performance that was absolutely hilarious!
The Will will be aired this Sunday, 20 December 2009, 9:30pm on Channel U. Be sure to catch it!
Updates!
Whoa, that was a long hiatus! The good folks at Animagine have been keeping me busy for the 3rd Christmas running! Every year, they hold a student animation competition called NE Mation and it’s now in it’s 4th year! An open call is held for students to pitch ideas for a 1 minute animation clip based on the year’s theme on Total Defence. 10 teams are selected and the students are taught how to animate to realise their ideas!
I just visited the set last Friday and can’t wait to start work on the clips! The students look like they’ve been animating for years – 2D, 3D, stop motion, mixed medium etc. To top it all off, the winning team (voted by the public and some experts) gets to visit a world renowned animation studio, namely Pixar, Studio Ghibli & Dreamworks! I’m waiting for the day they bring the winning sound designer along.
Here’s last year’s winning clip done by YJC students featuring lego animation:
