I completed House of Straw in early August 2009. It’s the debut feature film of Yeo Siew Hua, or Chris as he’s more commonly known. He’s a dear friend of mine I knew through Ngee Ann Polytechnic.
It was the most intensive film I’ve ever worked on as all but 2 scenes of this 2 hour 10 min feature had to be redubbed and recreated from scratch. The production started off as a guerilla style one – besides the director and cast, there was no fixed crew or equipment – hence the poor location sound.
With me on the post audio team was Felix from EQ Ward. The film was completed in his studio. I remember recording foley for him and his jeans kept making shuffling noises. I told him to hold the fabric apart. Next thing I knew, he’d already taken them off and was standing in the booth with only his jocks. It sure helped the recording process and also made the warm booth a little less stuffy I guess.
Another uniqueness of the film is that it features 7 composers of different genres. I tell Chris the film can act as a composer’s showreel as well.
Soon after its completion, the film premiered in the Bangkok International Film Festival and was in competition for the Golden Kinnaree Award in the Southeast Asian Section. It scored pretty good reviews too (see here, here and here)! Not too shabby for a first feature!
Here’s the trailer. Be sure to catch it when it’s screening in Singapore!
